We covered a lot of ground this week.

We finished our paper mache bowls, took a quiz on Art from Africa, took notes on Cubism and made our "Cubist Creations."

SEHS:
Mon. - Finished bowls
Wed. - Took quiz, notes on Cubism, started Cubist creations (homework due Fri if not completed in class).
Fri. - Started Art from Europe research (steps #1 & 2 in the packet.)

IF YOU WERE ABSENT:

*** For people who went to language day on Friday 5/1 ***

If you want to choose your own European art movement, you need to do Steps #1 & 2 before Tuesday 5/5. You can bring your rankings of your top 3 choices to class on Tuesday and I'll work with those. Otherwise, you'll be a day behind; I'll assign you an art movement for Tuesday and you'll need to do step #1 on your own for homework.

The packet is pasted below. If the formatting isn't perfect, just do the best you can. The ideas are most important.

SHS
Tues. - Finished bowls
Thurs. - Took quiz, notes on Cubism, started Cubist creations (homework due Mon. if not completed in class).

We'll start Art from Europe research (steps #1 & 2 in the packet) on Monday.

IF YOU WERE ABSENT:
Be sure to finish your bowl and get the notes on Cubism when you return to class. The grading rubric is pasted below just FYI.

CUBIST CREATIONS: 30 points Name: ____________________

___/5 Simplification: Use of geometric shapes

___/5 Distortion: Use of symbolic, rather than realistic form
* Break up, analyze, and re-assemble the forms of objects in an abstract way
* Include multiple viewpoints
* Create a “flattened” effect by placing the background and object planes together, instead of one in front of another

___/5 Emphasis: Choose key lines & make them stand out
___/5 Effort and neatness
___/10 Paragraph explaining how this is a Cubist creation
• Address: Simplification, Distortion, and Emphasis of _form_. Give specific examples (pretend I cannot see your creation).

European Artistic Movements Name: _________________________
Individual Research Project Total: ______/180

For this project, you will have the opportunity to find and research art from Europe that most interests you. After learning about the movement you choose, you will then create an original piece of artwork in the style of that movement. Finally, you will do a short presentation of your artwork to the class, explaining how your art reflects your chosen movement.

Step 1: Choosing a Movement (50 points – 10 points per movement). Date Due:__________

Directions: Before you choose a movement, you need to make sure you know all of your options. For each of the 10 artistic movements listed below, write a brief explanation (phrases instead of complete sentences are fine) of what the movement is, the way you understand it. Be sure to address what makes this art movement different than others. Then, look at a few examples of the artistic style, choose one that you like, quickly sketch it, and write the name of the work and the artist in the space provided.

You must complete this basic research on EACH of the movements BEFORE you can choose one movement to further research. I will assign the movements based on peoples’ top three choices. Not everyone will get his or her top choice.

I recommend using the following website as a resource: www.arthistoryguide.com. You may also use other sites for your research, but I recommend starting here.

1. Answer the questions below thoroughly and thoughtfully, making sure to use complete sentences when required. You may need to look at additional websites in order to find the information below. Please don’t use Wikipedia. I recommend the following sites: www.artlex.com or http://www.artcyclopedia.com.

1. When did your artistic movement begin? When was it most popular? How does this form of art still affect art today?

a. ________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
b. ________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
c. ________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________

2. Where did your artistic movement begin? What does your artistic movement reveal about the culture where it originated? (Think about the aspects of culture we’ve discussed in class: values, beliefs, technology, spirituality, religion, etc.)

a. ________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________

b. ________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________

3. Who were the 3 main artists associated with your movement? Where were they from? What did they contribute to the movement?

a. ________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
b. ________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
c. ________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
4. What are the main characteristics of your movement that make it different than others? List at least 3 and explain.
a. ________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
b. ________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
c. ________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
5. Choose 2 new examples of your type of art (not the same one as you did on Step 1) from 2 different artists. For each one, write the name of the piece and the name of the artist. Then, explain how the piece of art reflects the movement in 3-4 complete sentences. In your explanation, you need to explain how the artwork reflects at least 3 of the elements you listed for question #3. Be specific.

Example 1 (title + artist): __________________________________________________________

Explanation in 3-4 complete sentences: _______________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________

Example 2 (title + artist): __________________________________________________________

Explanation in 3-4 complete sentences: _______________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________
_______________________________________________________________________________

Step 4: Planning Your Original Art (5 Points) Date Due:__________

Directions: Below, create a plan for an original piece of art—made by you—that will reflect the main principles of your artistic movement. The scoring criteria for the original artwork is as follows:

• Must reflect a unique subject—not simply a copy of a pre-existing piece (5 points)
• Must clearly demonstrate 3 main principles of the chosen artistic movement (10 points)
• Must demonstrate obvious effort, thought, and care (15 points)

Please keep in mind that I will only provide the following materials in class for you to use: paper, glue, colored pencils, black pens, rulers, compasses, watercolors, oil pastels, and tempera paint. If there is anything else you will need for your artwork, you must bring it to class yourself. You will have one entire class to make your creation. If you need more time, you will need to finish your project at home.

In the space below, make a list of materials you will need and where you’ll get them. Then, create a basic sketch of what you want your artwork to look like. This rough draft is worth 5 points. If you think that you will need/want something to look at as you create your artwork, like a photo, magazine clipping, etc., be sure to bring that from home on the day we create.

Will be done in class on: _________________

Materials Needed and Where I’ll Get Them: ___________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________

Sketch:

Step 5: Original Art (30 Points) Date Due:__________

_____/15 Fits within the criteria of the art movement as described above

_____/15 Neatness and effort

Step 6: Explanation of Original Artwork (15 Points) Date Due:__________
Directions: In the space below how your original artwork demonstrates at least 3 of the main principles of your artistic movement. Please use at least 5-6 complete, thoughtful sentences in your response. Be sure to give specific examples (pretend I cannot see your artwork.)

Explanation of Artwork: _________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Step 7: Presentation Preparation (10 Points) Date Due:__________
Next you will prepare a short (1-2 minute) presentation that teaches the main characteristics of your art movement to the class. You will show your original art and explain how your artwork reflects the art movement’s main characteristics.

To prepare for this, brainstorm below how you will convey this information to the class. This should be a creative, fun presentation! You can include song, dance, a skit, a game show, etc. By the end of your presentation, the class should understand and remember the movement, the 3 main characteristics, and how your piece of art fits within that artistic category.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
Now that you’ve brainstormed, choose the strongest idea, that everyone in your group can agree upon. List the steps of the presentation in order and note which parts will be performed by which person/people.
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________

Step 8: Presentation (35 Points) Date Due:__________

Directions: For your presentation, you and the other people who chose your movement will each show the class your artwork and explain how it shows 3 main characteristics of your chosen movement. Please do not simply read your response off of this sheet. You should speak to us, making eye contact and speaking at an appropriate volume. You will receive an individual score for your speaking part and the group will receive a common score for creativity. The presentation will be scored on the following criteria:

_____/10 Clearly explains 3 main elements of movement
_____/10 Clearly explains how the 3 main elements are included in each person’s original artwork –
using specific examples
_____/5 Uses appropriate volume and language – show appropriate enthusiasm
_____/5 Faces audience and makes eye contact
_____/5 Creativity – presents information and artwork in a fun and engaging way

Paper Mache Bowls - Week of 4/20

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 255px; height: 174px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_znB1tWXHGHw/SfJeSR4v2wI/AAAAAAAAANY/FyJovBzrIes/s320/bowls.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5328424977264794370" />

This week we've been making paper mache bowls, inspired by the group "Wola Nani," which supports women living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Once again, your Projects Advisor will assist you as you work through the Projects Packet by introducing the skills you’ll need to complete your independent study work. As you know, you have a Projects class period built into your schedule. While you will not meet with your Projects Advisor during this time, it is important that you use the time allotted in your schedule to complete your projects assignments.
This packet outlines the 4th quarter of 9th Grade Projects. It contains some of the assignments, due dates, and formatting requirements that will guide your independent study throughout the quarter. Supplemental sheets will be provided for certain assignments as their due dates approach. Please read the packet carefully at the beginning of the quarter, with your parent/guardian, and complete the Parent/Student Verification page. If you have questions about assignments that you cannot find answers to in this packet, remember that you can contact your Projects Advisor by email or during his/her office hours.
The last three quarters, you have explored who you are as individuals in the world, researched extensively one important issue in an African state, and identified personal health issues you and your peers face. The fourth and final projects class will combine these previous quarters and allow you to create a public health campaign designed to target a particular audience in an Asian state of your choice. The project will culminate in a Global Health Awareness day held during the Asian Unit in your Global Geography class.
Below you will find a list of possible topics for your project. These topics will be randomly selected during class. Once you have been assigned a global health issue, your next assignment will be to research and gain an understanding of that issue, and then find an Asian State that is highly impacted by that particular health concern. The rest of the quarter will be spent learning about the issue, your Asian State, and how to develop a public health campaign tailored for the specific population of your chosen state.
List of possible topics:
Alcoholism
Cholera
Influenza and Avian flu
Dengue fever
Dental health
Domestic violence
Drug addiction
Encephalitis

Family Planning
Hepatitis
HIV/AIDS
Malaria
Malnutrition and vitamin deficiency
Maternal Health (reproductive health, childbirth, breastfeeding)

Measles
Polio
STIs
Tuberculosis
Typhoid
Waterborne diseases
Yellow fever

********************************

Assignment # 1: Parent/Student Verification (10 points)
Please read the projects packet and share the information with your parent or guardian. The first question you should ask yourself is whether your issue is a disease or illness such as Tuberculosis, or is it a health concern such as maternal health or domestic violence. How you approach your public health education plan will be determined by whether you must educate a population on how to avoid a particular disease or whether you will be promoting healthy lifestyles and habits.

Part 1:
The first step for this assignment is to find three reliable and relevant sources of information about your health issue. From those sources, you need to extract 10 significant facts about your issue. These facts would assist someone reading them in understanding the nature of the issue. This list of facts is similar to the “Evidence” section of your historiography-paper that you wrote on your African state for 2nd quarter projects. This assignment should be word-processed, your facts should be numbered, and each properly cited.

Part 2:
This second step for this assignment is to choose the Asian state that will be the setting for your public health campaign.
1. Using the sources provided below, research your health topic and identify three Asian states from the list where this disease or health concern is a serious issue.

2. Write the name of the three states and briefly explain the context of that disease or health concern in that state. Some questions to consider are:
• Whom does this issue affect?
• Is the disease or health campaign wide spread or limited to a certain area?
• If it is a disease, how is it spread?
• If it is a health concern, why is it a problem in that state?
• Give one strong reason this Asian state would be the best location for your health campaign.

3. Rank your three Asian states in order of preference, taking into account available information and significance of the issue to the state.
As you begin your journey, here is a list of the countries in Asia, and a few meaningful links for your perusal. Asia is broken up into four regions. Each is comprised of many nation-states.
States of South Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka.
States of Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Tibet, Viet Nam.
States of East Asia: China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Russia, Taiwan.
States of Central Asia: Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan.

Research Sites:

Start with a visit to the WHO (World Health Organization) site. It is a portal to many other sites, and is highly respected around the world. Begin with a search for “Asia.”
Visit: http://search.who.int
This should be your first stop, but not your last. The sites below are a few that complement and augment the WHO portal. Note that many groups/agencies actually originate in the areas of your study. They have different voices, and perspectives.

A good place to visit is The University of New South Wales, in Australia. The site offers a country-by-country breakdown of data that will help you in your search.
Visit: http://www.sphcm.med.unsw.edu.au/sphcmweb.nsf/page/Asia and browse away.

An NGO site that has some interesting articles is the South Asian Public Health Forum. As its name implies, this is a public forum, and as such will come at this topic in a different voice than through government-sponsored sites.
Visit: http://www.saphf.org/ (See list of articles near the bottom.)

A wonderful portal site is APACPH. Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health. If you find yourself moved by this topic/projects assignment, you might enter their Young Voices in Research for Health essay competition. Regardless, this site is easily accessible, and offers links to many sites and articles.
Visit: http://www.apacph.org

South Asian Health Issues, or Sawnet, is a wonderfully accessible site. It features many articles focused on women’s health issues. They state: “This [site] provides pointers to some studies of health issues extracted mostly from Medline that are specifically concerned with South Asians, particularly women…” It is well-arranged, and navigation is a breeze.
Visit: http://www.sawnet.org/health/

The South and Southeast Asia Resource Centre on Sexuality is a site to visit if you are interested in sexuality, sexual health, and sexual well-being in the region of Asia. There are many links on this site. Of particular note is the “News” link, where you will find many articles on various topics.
For the articles, visit: http://www.tarshi.net/asiasrc/news/newsarticles.asp
For the main site, visit: http://www.tarshi.net/asiasrc/about_resource_centre.asp

Grading for Assignment #2: Exploring Your Health Topic
___/5 Assignment is clearly written and word-processed

Part 1
___/5 At least three sources are correctly cited in MLA format
___/5 At least ten facts about your health issue are included

Part 2
___/15 Three Asian states are chosen and ranked; each one with a brief explanation of the importance of the health issue to that state
___/30 TOTAL

***************************
Assignment #3: Health Issue Vocabulary/Terms (30 points)
Now that you have chosen your health issue and country, the next step to identify the key words related to this issue in the context of where the issue occurs.
Think about how being in the country you’ve chosen affects this health issue. What culturally-bound values and/or behaviors play a role in how this health issue is contracted or treated? How does the geography of the country play a role in how people “get” this disease/health issue? Etc.
Create a vocabulary list of 15 terms and definitions related to your health issue. You will use these words in your public health education plan.
Keeping the following questions in mind when choosing your words. Make sure your list of terms includes words relevant to all the appropriate categories below. For health issues that are to be promoted rather than eliminated (such as maternal health), terms may not fall neatly into the three categories above. Do your best to present a wide range of terms germane to the topic.

1. Infection/Inception
• How do people contract this disease or end up having this health issue?
• What actions/inactions are involved? Are there technical terms for these?
• Where do people encounter this health risk?
• How does the health risk become an actual infection, disease, etc.

2. Pathology/Manifestation
• How does this health issue affect the body?
• What are the symptoms?
• What causes the symptoms?

3. Prevention/Cure
• How can people avoid this health issue?
• What steps are necessary to cure a person of this disease/health issue?
• If the disease has no cure, why is that? What steps are needed to find a cure?

Grading for Assignment #3: Health Issue Vocabulary/Terms

___/5 Assignment is word processed and clearly formatted

___/15 At least 15 words are included and clearly relate to health issue

___/5 The words represent terms for all the categories above.

___/5 In-text citations are included for each definition, and an informal bibliography is included at the end.

___/30 TOTAL

********************************
Name: _________________________________

Assignment # 4 Human Development Statistics (35 points total)
The purpose of this assignment is for you to gather pertinent information about your state and its people in order to determine the most appropriate approach for your public service campaign.

First go to the CIA World Fact Book www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/ and find your Asian state. How you use your map will greatly depend on your global health topic.

1. Copy the outline map of your Asian State from the Maps-on-File set in the library at your school.
2. All maps must include the following items.

a. The Capital
b. Neighboring States and or Water bodies
c. The Major Landforms such as rivers, mountain ranges, lakes deserts, etc.
d. Major Cities
e. Major Transport Networks (highways, train routes, airports, etc.)

3. Consider your health issue and decide what else needs to be included on your map. If your country has a cholera outbreak, indicate the infected area on the map. If malaria is your issue, elevation might be important to include because certain higher altitudes have no risk of malaria. Really think about what will enhance the map-reader’s understanding of your issue related to your specific state. You should have at least three thoughtful additions to your map.

4. Think about how you will use this map in your plan. For instance you could show the percentage of malaria cases in various parts of the country. Another use of the map could be to show the area you will target with your public information campaign.

5. As with all maps you create, include the major map elements: title, key, scale, compass rose, and name.

Grade for Assignment #6: Country Map
___/5 Map is neatly and carefully made
___/5 Title, key, scale, and compass rose are included
___/10 Capitol, neighboring states and/or water bodies, major landforms, major cities, and major transport networks are included
___/10 At least 3 additions to map are included that relate to health issue
___/35 TOTAL

Fri. 4.17.09 - SEHS and Mon. 4.20.09 SHS Dance Day3

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 118px; height: 78px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_znB1tWXHGHw/SekAEzjuGkI/AAAAAAAAANA/sWaEhkKBwzU/s320/images-1.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5325788116901829186" />
Dance from Africa Day 3

SEHS AM -
20 min. practice
Performances.
(IF YOU WERE ABSENT, YOU NEED TO COMPLETE A PERFORMANCE; EITHER DURING CLASS TIME NEXT CLASS OR ON YOUR OWN TIME: FREE PERIOD OR LUNCH.
