Mon. and Tues. 4/13-14 Dance from Africa Day One


Dance from Africa Day One. Guest Teacher: Kreg Hulings.

Classwork:
Reflection chart entry for the day. Title: Kpatsa
Then write how this dance relates/or doesn’t relate to the 5 elements of African dance.

Warm Up - 5 – 10 minutes.
Play “Machine” for the class to model creating different rhythms.

Elements of African Dance Intro – 10 min.
(1) Passed out sheets (grid with pictures of people dancing).
(2) Identifying the different dance moves from “Kpatsa” according to the sheet
(3) Quickly review the sheet and answer any questions – 5 min.

Kpatsa Labeling – 20 min
(1) Watch and practice with the teacher instructing how to do Kpatsa on the DVD
(2) Pause after each movement, give it a name and for the 1st 3, go over together as a class which elements it involves, give time for students to write the name of the dance move in the box it fits in.
Example: write “Washer Woman” in “Orientation to the Earth”
(3) Continue to pause after each movement and name it. Give students time to fill in the name of the dance move in the box it fits in.
** The element of “competition” will not be used.

Learn the Kpatsa – 20 min

If Time - create the groups that they’ll use to create their own dance. No fewer than four: no more than six. If anyone’s left out, teacher will create the groups.

Homework:
• Make an instrument out of found objects – Due Wed. 4/15 SEHS , Due Thurs. 4/16 SHS
• Example: find an empty bottle and fill with dried beans
• Non-example: “find” a drum/guitar, etc.
• (If you want to bring an instrument someone else made, that’s great; also bring an instrument you made.)
